Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effects of alcohol drinking in the relationships between previous suicidal attempts and suicidal ideation among older people who live alone with care services. A face-to-face survey with each elderly who lives alone in Seoul, May 2010, was conducted, and 553 questionnaires were analyzed for this study. Linear regression analysis was performed to examine causal relationships and the moderating effects among and between variables. The results showed that older adults who had previous suicidal attempts appeared to have higher score for the suicidal ideation than the elderly without suicidal attempts. In addition, the level of alcohol assumption had the moderating effect on subjects¡¯ suicidal ideation. Based on the finding, older adults who live alone with a history of suicide attempts form a high-risk group for suicide prevention. Practical implications for the elderly suicide prevention are as follows. A comprehensive approach to suicide prevention for the older adults should include screening tools, assessment, and intervention for high-risk people, especially with a history of suicide attempts and late-life drinking.
